Paulette Walker Johnson
Dr. Paulette Walker Johnson graduated with a B.S. degree from Morgan State University where she was a soror of Delta Sigma Theta and a “Miss Omega Psi Phi.” She earned a Master’s Degree from Springfield College and a Doctoral Degree from Virginia Tech. Paulette Walker Johnson was the first female Athletic Director in Virginia State University history and also served as head softball coach at VSU, leading the Lady Trojan softball team to win the first CIAA Softball Championship. “Doc” is best known as the coach and creator of the nationally acclaimed, and world-renowned, Virginia State University Woo Woo Cheerleading Squad. She retired from her coaching position, after 35-plus years, in August of 2010. In recognition of her service to VSU and the Petersburg Public School System, the Mayor of Petersburg, Virginia established DR. PAULETTE WALKER JOHNSON DAY in October 1999. Dr. Paulette Walker Johnson is a founding member and first president of the CIAA Cheerleader Coaches Association, and in March 2011, she was the first cheerleader coach to be inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports Management at Virginia State University. She began hosting the weekly radio talk show, “Real Women, Real Talk” on Virginia State University’s radio station, The Source 91.3 WVST.
