About the Host

Gerard Howard

A native of New Orleans, Gerard Howard grew up in an environment where Jazz flourished.  It wasn’t uncommon to see brass bands and a crowd second lining down the street or your friends and classmates grow up to be Jazz musicians.  While growing up in New Orleans, Howard was a heavy listener to WWOZ and cites the late Bob French and Mike Gourie as his primarily influences in announcing the music.  His laid back delivery and New Orleans accent has been successful in turning new ears onto the music and garnering him a wide base of fans and supporters to WJSU-FM 88.5.

In addition to his work on the air, Howard is an Internet entrepreneur.  He started the Internet’s first site for Black College Marching Bands in the late ’90’s, blackcollegebands.com.  He’s also a fine art photographer with work in several galleries in the Jackson, MS area and is an original member of Jackson’s Southern Comfort Brass Band.  An avid runner, Howard is currently training for his first marathon.
